Evaluating Another Monitor: A Simple Guide

Experiencing visual glitches on your display can be frustrating. If other troubleshooting steps haven’t worked, try using an alternate monitor to identify whether your monitor or computer is at fault.

Steps to Use a Different Monitor

Detach Your Current Monitor

  • Power down your computer.
  • Unplug the video cable (HDMI or DisplayPort) from your current display.

Set Up an Alternative Display

  • Grab another monitor or a TV for testing purposes.
  • Ensure the new display is turned off before connecting it.

Stick with the Same Cable

  • To maintain consistency, use the same video cable (HDMI or DisplayPort) from your initial setup.
  • Attach it to the alternative display.
  • Switch the display on.

Observe Under Identical Conditions

  • Boot up your computer.
  • Operate your computer as usual to see if the problem persists.
  • If the new screen works without hitches, your old monitor might be the culprit.

Need More Help?

If symptoms remain, your computer’s graphics card, drivers, or other internal components may be the issue. Consider going through these troubleshooting tricks:

  • Performing a thorough power cycle.
  • Carefully reseating the graphics card.
  • Reseating the RAM modules.
