Entering Safe Mode in Windows: A Handy Guide

Safe Mode is a diagnostic environment that enables Windows to operate with basic drivers and services. It's useful for pinpointing and fixing problems caused by conflicting software or drivers. Below is a step-by-step guide to entering Safe Mode across different Windows versions.

Booting into Safe Mode can offer several advantages:

Booting via the Settings Menu

Access Settings

To begin, take the following steps to access Safe Mode:

  • Open the Start menu and select Settings (look for the gear icon).
  • Navigate to System.
  • Locate the Advanced startup section and click Restart now.

Restart with Sign-In Options

Another approach for accessing Safe Mode is through the sign-in screen, follow these steps:

  • On the Windows sign-in page, press and hold the Shift key, then select Power > Restart.
  • Your computer will restart, showing a list of options. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  • After restarting again, a list of choices will appear. Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode. To use Safe Mode with Networking, press 5 or F5.
